Competiting against Madrid, Spain and Istanbul, Turkey, Tokyo, Japan won the final bid for the 2020 Olympics and the 2020 Paralympics. Despite persistent concerns over the safety of Japan after the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident, the tragic result of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, Japan beat Madrid and Istanbul for the 2020 Olympics based on general perceptions of "financial soundness and public security" according to a report from NHK News.
Tokyo had previously lost the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics so the win for 2020 has brought about a lot of excitement after that disappointment. Tokyo had previous hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics, making the 2020 Summer Olympics the second ever to be held in the capital of the island nation. Sapporo, in northern Japan, hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics and Nagano hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. The 2020 Summer Olympics will be the fourth, overall, Olympics held in Japan.
Still a few years away, Tokyo will begin preparations for the events and the world can look forward to the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in the Land of the Rising Sun.
