Tokyo man kills 9-year-old granddaughter in murder-suicide attempt

A 60-year-old man in Tokyo, allegedly strangled to death, his 9-year-old granddaughter and attempted to kill himself. The murder occurred at his home in Tokyo's Machida. The man lived with his daughter and son, according to the police.

Jan. 15, Fuji TV reported, according to police statements, when the child's father returned home from working an overnight shift, he found his daughter, wearing pajamas and lying on a futon bed.

The child had been strangled to death. The man found his father in another room, where his father, slit his own wrists and tried to hang himself, in a suicide attempt.

"Police said the grandfather was taken to hospital where his condition is not life-threatening. He was quoted as saying that he killed the girl, Fuji reported. " No word on the child's mother or motive in the crime.

This is the second incident of family violence, in 24-hours. A man died, and three family members were stabbed after an apparent family altercation in Awara City, Fukui.

"Police rushed to the scene and found the 49-year-old husband on the rooftop of the house with a stab wound to his neck. He was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead, police said."

The man's 49-year-old wife, 18-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son, had all suffered non life-threatening stab wounds in the back.
