Tokyo bound: Wieber, Sacramone, Raisman, Maroney, Li, Douglas and Vega

Presenting the 2011 U.S. women's World team, via USA Gymnastics on Twitter

  • Jordyn Wieber
  • Anna Li
  • Gabrielle Douglas
  • McKayla Maroney
  • Alicia Sacramone
  • Aly Raisman
  • Sabrina Vega

The surprises were numerous: Olympians Shawn Johnson and Chellsie Memmel were not selected. Gabrielle Douglas is being toted to Tokyo despite several large mistakes at the U.S. Championships, and Anna Li is likely to perform on two events, or maybe only bars.

The alternate was not announced, which likely means that she has not been determined yet. Douglas and Vega, the two healthy all-arounders chosen, will likely compete for that spot.

Interesting: According to the official press release, Shawn Johnson was named the non-traveling alternate to Tokyo. Wieber's coach John Geddert will be the head coach of this team, backed up by Li's coach and mom Wu Jiani. Surprisingly left out seems to be Mihai Brestyan, who has two athletes (Sacramone and Raisman) on the squad.

Li on Twitter just after the announcement: "Second time in my life to shed tears of joy! Thanks SO much to everyone who has ALWAYS supported me! I can't believe I'm going to worlds!"

Sidenote: Hey, they chose the same team I would have.

The team for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico the week after the World Championships was also announced. Team members are:

  • Bridget Sloan
  • Chellsie Memmel
  • Shawn Johnson
  • Brandie Jay
  • Jessie DeZiel
  • Bridgette Caquatto

Replacement athletes for the Pan Am team are WOGA's Grace McLaughlin, Zenith Elite's Mackenzie Wofford and West Coast Elite's Hallie Mossett. Sloan's coach Marvin Sharp will head up this team, assisted again by Wu Jiani.
