In an announcement that came just in time for the CP+ electronics show, third party photographic lens maker Tokina has unveiled a prototype 70-200f4 lens, which was first revealed to the world as a non-working mockup at last year's show. Implication: a fully working prototype means that the real deal could be just around the corner.
So, what of the new lens?
Unfortunately, specifics have not been revealed as of yet, but the basic specifications are known and are as follows. The lens will be compatible for both full and sub-frame cameras, will have a minimum aperture of f22 across the zoom range, will take 76mm filters, will weigh 1020g, and measure 82 x 167mm. Price? That's TBA, too, but I'd bet on something in the $900 range.
Secondly, Tokina has also unveiled a new lens for crop-only: a 12-28 f4. Like the 70-200, only the most basics in terms of dimensions have been announced. As for pricing, by looking at past trends for Tokina's 12-24s, look for this one to hit stores for about $500.
Want to buy photo gear in the Cleveland area? Well, there's Cleveland-based Dodd Camera, with its downtown superstore. In addition, there are many smaller Cleveland metro area chain stores in the Cuyahoga County area, too. Dodd is an authorized Tokina dealer.
