Toddler heroin: NJ dad arrested after heroin found hidden on toddler at daycare

A toddler with heroin at a New Jersey daycare prompted the arrest Monday of the young boy’s father, who is accused of filling his 2-year-old son’s jacket with 48 small bags of heroin and forgetting to remove them, reports NBC News on Wednesday.

Phillip Young, 27, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, and certainly won’t be up for any parent of the year accolades after he shamelessly stuffed his boy’s clothes with the illegal drug.

Daycare workers at the child-care center in Paterson discovered the heroin, and called police, who then arrested Young after it was confirmed he dropped the boy off that morning, said Paterson Police Lieutenant Bert Ribeiro.

Parents of the other children who attend the Michael’s Energy Center non-profit preschool said they were not immediately informed of the “drug bust,” leading to several complaints and concerns over the safety of their children.

Some parents found out from reporters telling them as they arrived to pick up their children.

“And my babies are in there, are you kidding me?” said mom Countswella Lampley when informed by a local TV news reporter.

Another parent said young kids have a tendency to put things in their mouth and was concerned over an accidental ingestion of the drug. The daycare takes children from 18 months up to four years of age.

“My daughter sees something on the floor, puts it in her mouth thinking it's candy – same thing could have happened here,” said Dulce Ibanez.

Young has been jailed on $85,000 bail. His boy is in the care of his family.
