As usual, the subject matter wrapped in the title of my post pretty much says it all. Because there isn't much time to waste to get this hot on the press, read on.
TONIGHT, at 5pm, with a reception following to 6:30pm, at Vanderbilt's Sarratt Gallery, "Prison Galleries: Imagining Justice from the Inside Out" will be celebrated. In the spirit of Martin Luther King Day, Sarratt Gallery exhibits outsider art work together with members of Vanderbilt University Department of Philosophy and that of prisoners on death row at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. And in the spirit of dialogue, Sarratt Gallery presents a series of paintings, sketches, and sculptures created by said prisoners on death row. The artwork is very powerful and pretty much says it all. Also tonight, at 7pm, in Langford Auditorium, there will also be a special event with Michelle Alexander, author of "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration and the Age of Colorblindness' as part of Vanderbilt Martin Luther King Day.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 22nd, will be another blow your mind day and night. You better call Rumours East NOW at 615-262-5346 in case there are still seats available to witness the 6th installment of East Side Storytellin' hosted by mE! Tomorrow will be another round of Nashville author readings, Nashville musicians singing, and creative conversations to boot. Wait, did I fail to mention that it is FREE to attend and that all you have to do is call and be one of the first 35 people to do so? You better get on the phone now and check because there won't a free seat open at 7pm sharp when we start and author Barbara Nowak (co-author of The Saucy Sisters' Guide to Wine) and musical instant legend of Julie Lee take the stage. Seriously, this thing is taking a wonderful life of its own. Come be a part of the magic.
Then, Thursday, January 24th, another FREE event is going down that will be fun for all involved. Marathon Music Works is having an event open house from 6-10pm. It is a chance for you to ask questions about hosting your own events and the possibilities that are there to be had by all who dare to dream and do things. Side note, there will be a cd release show party for Brazilbilly from 8-10pm. And if you can't make it by Marathon Music Works, you should drop by the 5 Spot at 9pm to see East Side Storytellin' alum Melissa Mathes and her band Luella and the Sun blow you away with a new rockin' sound. Just saying, you don't have to wear skinny jeans to be cool these days. Showing up is more than half the battle.
This weekend looks pretty chill all around and I'm sure there will be plenty of places to visit and find good things and people, but I'll leave you this week with a call for artists. Antioch High School has issued a call to artists for a community-wide art exhibition examining identity. The exhibition, called "Frist Antioch Community Exhibition (F.A.C.E.), invites artists of all ages, in all media, from all areas of the city to explore the theme of IDENTITY from personal visual perspectives. The exhibition will open at The Crossings Event Center February 28. This exhibition is being organized by Antioch High School students with the assistance of a team of Antioch faculty and staff members of the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
