Today Show's Natalie Morales and Dog, Zara help Shelter Pets

Natalie Morales of NBC's 'Today' Show adopted a shelter dog in 2011 that appeared on the show. (Check out her April 2011 adoption here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/22/natalie-morales-adopts-dog-today_n_975972.html ). Not only did Morales adopt an adult shelter dog named Zara has become a forever member of her family. Morales commented that Zara is her "best friend".

Now, Zara is filling an even bigger role. In addition to becoming part of the Morales family, Zara- the rescued shelter dog- is now the star (along with Natalie Morales) in an upcoming PSA for The Shelter Pet Project. The Shelter Pet Project has been created to promote the adoption of shelter/rescue pets across the nation. Not only was Zara adopted- now she is helping other shelter/rescue pets find forever homes through her PSA-- amazing!

Currently, only 20% of shelter pets are being adopted. Most often, kittens and puppies are adopted, while adult pets are faced with death in too many American shelters. As of 2013, approximately 7 million healthy, adoptable pets enter our shelter system each year. Nearly 3-4 million shelter pets die every year- as they are not adopted and shelters are slow to make progress towards becoming No Kill. There are many things we can all do to help. Foster a pet, adopt a pet from a local rescue or shelter group, DONATE to a LOCAL rescue shelter or rescue group, volunteer your time to help walk the dogs or pet/socialize the cats at your local shelter, help with fundraiser's, help with adoption events, write articles...the list is endless.

Zara is a lucky rescued dog and now she is working to help other shelter pets find forever homes- how are you stepping up to the plate to help? Taking one small action can save a life.
