'Today Show': Katharine McPhee talks NBC's 'Smash,' 'American Idol'

It may have come in a little bit of an unorthodox manner, but Katharine McPhee has managed to find her way from "American Idol" back to stardom with "Smash" -- and she's happy to tell her story.

On "The Today Show" Monday morning, McPhee said that the "Idol" experience was really just nerve-wrecking, but following it she never gave up in her pursuit to be more than just a singer. She had met with show executive producer Steven Spielberg not long after her run on the Fox competition ended, and years later it ended up materializing into this role as Karen.

McPhee said that on this coming episode we would find out whether she or Megan Hilty's character of Ivy ends up getting the coveted role of Marilyn -- and we can also expect more music.
