Meet Christopher Pierce, DC of Portland. He’s a Bicycle Chiropractor, meaning he specializes in bicycle-related health and injury treatment. It’s his goal to make sure Portland is healthy and that their bikes fit them properly, so Portland can be the safest, most accessible city on the planet for bicyclists.
He’s not just a bike enthusiast, he’s somewhat of a nut about it. He speaks at colleges and events across the country, holds bike clinics, teaches doctors his chiropractic techniques for their patients, and he’s involved in (if not running) just about every bike event that takes place here.
He’s been married 10 years to Huma, a Canadian Navy vet and has a 5 year-old boy named Aiden that puts a sparkle in his eye when he talks about him. He encourages his son to experience as much as he safely can, telling us a story about his son asking if he can eat an earthworm. Dad said, “Why not?” After biting off half the worm and chewing on it, his son then asked, “Dad? Can I spit it out?” Of course, Dad said, “Why not?” Now his son knows without a doubt, earthworms don’t taste all that good. You can’t teach experience like that.
He raises chickens and uses their manure to fertilize a garden that he keeps as organic as he can. He takes all his own advice about being healthy and eats well. He even chops his own wood to heat the house.
He loves fishing and so does his little family. Teaching his son everything seems to be a favorite activity of this chiropractor. When he wants to get away from it all he goes to the beach to relax. Lots of people find peace and restoration at the ocean’s edge, and he’s no different.
And, he’s got heart smarts. He even advertises that he’ll trade help for care and services. So, if you can’t afford the care he gives you, he’ll trade it for help in writing letters to politicians about bicycle safety laws, or ask you to attend and help at bike events, and there’s other things he can use help with. One $60 treatment is worth 3 hours of your time, to him. It’s rare that medical professionals are that easy to work with, but he’s a part of Portland’s charm.
You might find him at a bike event sometime. If you do, say hi and make an appointment with him to fit your bike to your body. There truly is nobody else to do this for you.
