We’re back, and just in time. We missed the big news from Steamboat yesterday of 27 inches in 24 hours, then an additional 7 inches in just a few more hours, for a total of 34 inches in 30 hours. Steamboat reports a total of five feet of new snow this month at mid-mountain and almost six feet at the summit, allowing the resort to open everything, including its legendary tree skiing.
With the addition of new snow the Colorado Avalanche Information Center continues to warn skiers and riders of considerably high avalanche danger in the Steamboat area and all around the state, including side and backcountry areas accessed from the resorts. Areas beyond ski area boundaries are not patrolled or maintained.
“The best idea on big snow days is to gather your friends and hit the slopes. There’s always room for friends, even on a powder day,” said John Kohnke, patrol director. “It’s especially important to ski and rider with others when you’re playing in deep snow conditions, near trees, or in avalanche prone areas.”
According to the National Weather Service, it’s expected to snow on and off all week long here and there with waves of moisture coming into Colorado. Things are shaping up quite nicely indeed in the high country. The only potential problem will be wind as “blowing snow” is also part of the forecast through Wednesday.
