Today’s Colorado ski and snow report: the opposite vortex

See also

You may have heard of the so-called Polar Vortex that has plagued much of the nation this winter. More importantly, Colorado’s Snow Vortex shifted directions over the past 24 hours.

Whereas the majority of storms this season began with the northern and central mountains, this latest one begins south and west, as you can see from the snow totals below.

Weather is mysterious. Yes, the forecast of it has become more accurate over the years, but pinpointing specific elements of it is near impossible. There are too many variables. Add in the mountain-and-valley variable and you can get unexpected mini vortices that suck in more snow than surrounding areas.

Anyway, you can see a bit of that in this morning’s snow report. In a nutshell, it’s a powder day in the southern mountains while the northern and central mountains may begin yielding powder days tomorrow and throughout the entire week.

We’re not expecting the same 30”-plus totals from this system, but we are expecting a steady and consistent snowfall all the way into the weekend. It appears the best powder-day potential across Colorado will be tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow morning for the latest snow report and any adjustments in the forecast. In the meantime, here are the overnight snow totals from Colorado’s ski areas…
