Today’s Colorado ski and snow report: Merry Christmas Double Post*

Peak 6 at Breck opens today, and if that wasn't enough, Breck reports 8 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas, we say again!

Breckenridge Ski Resort

If your Christmas tradition is skiing or riding, you’re in for quite a treat this morning, especially if you hit any of the ski areas along I-70. Be advised that Loveland Pass is closed for the time being due to “adverse conditions,” so be careful up there.

The big winner, showered with gifts over the past 24 hours, is Breckenridge with eight inches of new snow. And, to top it off, Peak 6 opens at Breck today!

Almost every other ski area in the state, excepting those in the southwest corner, picked up anywhere from 2 to 4 additional inches of snow as well.

The past six days have seen steady snowfall over the mountains, with most locations picking up at least a foot of new snow. Steamboat and Vail led the pack over those six days with 34 and 27 inches respectively. Nice!

Thanks to a good early season and this latest storm, we estimate that 80 percent of all skiable terrain is open across Colorado. Almost half of the ski areas are 100 percent open, or very close to that number, whilst the remaining ski areas are generally above 80 percent open.

We’re planning on hibernating for a bit since no new snow is expected in the mountains for about a week, though there’s a “slight chance” forecast during the weekend. We don’t expect it will amount to much, if anything, but if it does we’ll put the numbers together the next morning.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! In the meantime, here’s the latest snow report, with the one-, two-, three-, four-, five- and six-day totals, plus the latest terrain updates …
