Another Update: So just about the moment I-70 opens westbound at the Eisenhower Tunnel, another closure happens westbound at Mount Vernon Canyon, which is basically where you head uphill from C-470. Thanks jackasses!
Afternoon Update: Once again, jackasses have taken over I-70, forcing the closure of westbound I-70 from the Eisenhower Tunnel down to Silverthorne. The good news is that the snow continues to fall rather heavily up there. Loveland Pass is open, though, so be careful, and don't be a jackass.
Update: Well, it finally started snowing in earnest down here, and it is all over the state, so much so that 119/Boulder Canyon is closed because of "numerous accidents." Once again, we blame dufuses following too closely and not taking conditions into account more than we do the snow. Be that as it may, take an alternate route to Eldora this morning, either Coal Creek Canyon (72) south of Boulder or Left Hand Canyon north of Boulder. Our rule of thumb anyway is to avoid Boulder like the plague whenever we head to the mountains west of Boulder.
We were expecting to wake up to a blanket of snow on the ground and snow falling from the heavens like nobody’s business. Instead, it appears the ground might be a bit wet?
As per usual, the media played this puppy to the hilt. Major winter storm! Blizzard conditions! Stock up on food and ammo! And so on and so forth.
Please note that this media outlet (of sorts) did not make a big fuss about the coming storm. We’re skeptical (but also hopeful) by nature and like to weight the possibilities and ultimately report what actually happens.
In case you’re wondering, while it may not be doing much in Denver along the Front Range this morning, there was some snow overnight, which you can see in this morning’s Colorado Snow Report.
There was enough snow, in fact, to close Loveland Pass this morning due to so-called adverse conditions. Maybe y’all who’ve been here at least since the early ‘90s can correct us on this, but it seems like it used to take a lot more to close Loveland Pass, or any other road for that matter, than it does now. Perhaps it’s like every other government agency these days: we’re spending a lot more and getting a lot less. Or, perhaps our memories have been distorted over the years, which is also very likely.
According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, expect heavy snow in the high country throughout the day, tapering off tonight and leaving behind blue skies and powder tomorrow morning. You will definitely want to peep tomorrow morning’s snow report here.
