Snow is falling in the mountains! That’s the good news. The bad news is that it will move into Denver overnight as well, so get ready for summer drivers who forgot everything they learned by the end of last winter.
The Colorado Department of Transportation is reporting snow at many key locations, including Wolf Creek Pass, Fremont Pass, Vail to Copper along I-70 and Crested Butte. The snow is moving west and should hit the Continental Divide – meaning Loveland, A-Basin and Winter Park – shortly.
The official word from the National Weather Service is about an inch this evening, 8-12 inches overnight (snow is listed as 100 percent likely) and 4-7 inches tomorrow. If that holds up, the grand total could be close to two feet. Keep in mind that the National Weather Service is usually conservative about snow predictions, so keep your fingers crossed for three feet.
If this holds up you can expect a lot more terrain to open up at A-Basin, Loveland and Wolf Creek this weekend. A-Basin and Loveland have two runs each open and Wolf Creek, only open for weekends at this point, has about 20 percent of its terrain available.
With the new snow, Wolf Creek may be able to go back to the 80 percent or so it had opened just a couple of weeks ago and who knows what A-Basin and Loveland will open. Of course this is all conjecture at this point, but it looks good. Be sure to come back tomorrow morning for the snow report, which will be ready by the time you wake up to shovel the driveway and fight the goons on Denver’s streets and freeways. I’ll also keep my eyes peeled for any new terrain openings and post them as soon as they’re announced.
The weekend looks fantastic with sunshine and highs in the 30s forecast and it looks to stay that way until at least Wednesday of next week. If you’re going to come down with something – say the 24-hour flu – I would suggest you do so on Thursday.
Just out of habit, here’s the snow report, which will change (obviously) tomorrow morning…
Arapahoe Basin: 0”
Loveland: 0”
Wolf Creek: 0”
