Today’s Colorado ski and snow report: another commute from hell

It’s the classic good new/bad news scenario: Yeah! It snowed! Crap! It snowed! What you get is a powder day, but only if you can actually get up there without getting killed or stuck in traffic for hours on end.

Currently, I-70 is closed westbound at the Eisenhower Tunnel and eastbound at Vail Pass. Loveland Pass just closed as well, so you’re going nowhere if you’re going up there unless you exit at Empire and go to Winter Park. Even the Bandit is saying, “WTF?” It’s getting to the point where some of us are starting to say: “Screw it; let’s move to Utah.”

Anyway, as you might have guessed, we’re extremely frustrated by what’s become of the I-70 corridor. There is no easy answer. You can’t stop the hoards that have moved here from rat-race cities and brought the rat race to the snow-packed and icy roads of our mountains, leaving a post-apocalyptic wasteland in their wake. And, if you make major improvements, no one will really be able to enjoy the fruits of such an undertaking for a generation.

Anyway, all the best out there today, and if you got up early enough and enjoyed today’s fresh snow, more power to you.

Snow is likely all weekend long with the heaviest amounts today and tonight. Traffic in the mountains is expected to suck all weekend long in direct correlation with the amount of snow we’re expecting. We’ll keep you updated as the day progresses.
