Today's a Great Day to Shop at Meijer Stores!

Attention shoppers in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan looking for great deals on groceries and more at your local Meijer store! Today is the second day of a two-day promotion where Meijer is offering 5% off groceries and 15% off selected general merchandise items throughout the store when you use your Meijer credit card. If you clip coupons and also subscribe to mPerks, you can save even more!

I shopped at my local Meijer yesterday in Southport. Here are some examples of the savings:

  • Hostess "Ding Dongs" are "buy one get one free" at $4.29 per box. While this price is much higher than at the local Hostess Bakery Outlet, the bakery outlet was out of Ding Dongs ... but with the additional 5% off -- even the free box! Go figure! -- each box cost only $2.02 each!
  • I also bought a pair of weightlifting gloves. Meijer's mPerks currently offers 20% off one athletic item. The gloves also qualified for the 15% general merchandise discount. So, the gloves orginally priced at $9.99 came down to $6.79.
  • Cans of Meijer sliced peaches, normally priced at $1.19 each, were also on mPerks for 75 cents off three cans. So I bought three cans, saved 75 cents plus the additional 5%. Each can then cost only 88 cents each! And yeah, I bought the "light" variety to add to my breakfast cottage cheese.
  • Ivory body wash (24 oz.) was $3.79. I usually buy Suave because even without a coupon, it's usually less expensive. However, I had a 35 cents off coupon for the Ivory; and with the additional 5% discount, it came out a few cents cheaper per ounce than the Suave body wash.
  • Packages of Meijer chicken thighs or drumsticks are on sale for 99 cents per pound. Factor in the additional 5% with the Meijer credit card and the price drops to 94 cents per pound. Lately I've been buying the whole legs at 79 cents per pound and chopping the legs and thighs apart at home with a cleaver. But 94 cents per pound is an okay price for thighs and drums without the risk of losing a finger!

Just remember, today is the final day of the two-day, 5% off grocery promotion and you have to use your Meijer credit card to get this deal. MPerks offers have varying expiration dates, so watch those as well. Combining in-store specials with coupons and mPerks is really the way to go. Also don't forget to swipe your "community partners" card to help support your favorite local school or charitable organization. One thing I wish Meijer would do is somehow combine the credit card, mPerks and community partner card into one. I keep mentioning that on those receipt surveys. We'll see.

My total bill at Meijer was more than $100 before I scanned my coupons and all the discounts were figured in. My total savings was $28.85. My total bill (for groceries that will last most of the week) was $91.41.

Prior to my trip to Meijer I went to the Hostess Outlet Bakery on Madison Avenue. Always great deals there -- especially if you need to stock up on a lot of bakery items! I bought two loaves of whole wheat "Home Pride" bread, two packages of hamburger buns and two packages of hot dog buns for $5.26. I'm figuring that much bread at any grocery store would be close to or more than $20.00. A visit to the bakery outlet is a better value when you need more than just one loaf of bread. In a pinch, Meijer bread is usually around $1.19 per loaf, which is an okay price when I don't need other buns or Ding Dongs and want to save gas rather than drive a few extra miles. (Yeah, there's a lot of math going on in my head! And you thought all those years of algebra were useless!)

So, listen up northwest midwesterners: Head to your local Meijer today for some great deals on groceries and general merchandise items. Snow's coming later this week. Makes it a great time to stock up and save!
