Today Mardi Gras/Family Day starts at 10 am at the Anacostia Community Museum

Today will be a fun filled family day at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Museum from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on 1901 Fort Place, SE, in Anacostia. As the sun rose workers were preparing for the event.

The event is Mardi Gras/Family Day and will include live music, face painting, mask making, fortune telling, balloon art, and much more.

It is an event for the entire family on the last Saturday of Black History Month. Anacostia is also the home of the historic Frederick Douglass House and visitor’s center. There will be a free shuttle bus service from the Anacostia Metro Station to the Anacostia Museum for the Mardi Gras/ Family Day event. The free shuttle bus service will begin at 10 a.m. today and will continue on a loop throughout the day until 5 p.m. this afternoon.

There will also be guided tours of the Anacostia Museums fantastic current exhibitions that include “Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and Art of Independence,” and “Home Sewn Quilts from the Lower Mississippi Valley.”

Having been a guest of both the Frederick Douglass Home and the Anacostia Museum for over 22 years, your customer service reporter has found great customer service and hospitality at both locations. This weekend event will be a treat for mothers, fathers, and children alike.

In addition to enjoying the celebration there is also a great opportunity for volunteers to become part of the celebration. The Anacostia Museum is currently seeking volunteers to help with the numerous events that will take place as part of the Mardi Gras/Family Day event. Volunteer were still needed as of 3 p.m. yesterday. Potential volunteers are asked to call Jenelle Cooper at 202-633-4867 to apply to be a volunteer for the event today.

The best way to get to the Museum is to take the Anacostia Metro Station. The train runs on the Green Line and with the free shuttle service it will make the trip to the event very convenient.
