Orb has a date with destiny today when he joins a tough field in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The question everyone wants to know is whether Orb is a good horse or a great horse – All his connections can do is wait and see.
The colt has been exercising and running well. His trainer Shug McGaughey knows that Orb ran the half mile in :47.68, and his time was the fastest that any of the others logged for that distance.
It went really well! I thought he worked a nice, sharp half mile… I think everything’s going the right way. I’d like to get him back on the right track so we can have a positive fall with him. Obviously we’re in the race to win. But if we get a really good, solid effort, that would be fine too so we can move on. I think he’ll be awfully tough.
Orb is facing tough competition from Belmont victor Palace Malice and Haskell Invitational frontrunner Verrazano. Orb was beaten in Triple Crown legs 2 and 3, and took some time to lay up and rest. On July 3, Orb began workouts again and set his sights on the Travers today.
Orb’s exercise rider Jennifer Patterson took note of the extra muscle Orb has developed. She started working with Orb after he had a couple of weeks off. The colt is happy when he trains at Fair Hill and he has been getting continuously better.
Orb and Verrazano have been competitors during their racing campaigns. During the Kentucky Derby, Orb was the 5-1 favorite to win and he did not disappoint. He came from the outside to pull away at Churchill Downs, on a muddy track, to take the Derby. Orb’s win became McGaughey’s first win in the Kentucky Derby.
