Since its inception in 1999, National Collector Car Appreciation Day has been gaining in popularity across the country. Originally the initiative of The SEMA Action Network or SAN to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society, many municipalities have now issued proclamations naming the second Friday in July as the day to officially recognize those growing legions of car collectors and their unique vehicles.
The U.S. Senate has helped launch Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing Resolutions each year at the SAN’s request. The previous resolutions were sponsored by automotive advocates Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). There is also a trend to celebrate collector cars during the entire month of July.
Aside from special car gatherings and events, collectors are encouraged to pull their favorite car out of the garage and drive it to work so they can help spread the word about this annual celebration. Organized events are planned at SEMA's headquarters in Diamond Bar and the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The SEMA get-together is already sold out, but if you bring your collector car to Petersen and post a photo of it on Facebook, you will receive one free museum admission with proof at the admission desk. Free admission does not include Vault tours or parking.
