Today, May 7th, is Free Comic Book Day! Participating comic book shops across North America and around the world are giving away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores.
For Raleigh area comic book collectors (which, I've found, are the same breed as film fans and pop culture lovers) here's the press release (written by Zack Smith) for the participating merchant near you:
"MARVEL, DC COMICS CREATORS AND LIVE BANDS TEAM WITH ULTIMATE COMICS FOR FREE COMIC BOOK DAY
Chapel Hill, NC, April 2, 2011 -- Superman. Captain America. Inspector Gadget. The writers and artists behind these beloved characters’ comics will be out in full force at Chapel Hill’s Ultimate Comics on May 7 offering signed books, original sketches and of course free comics for the annual Free Comic Book Day extravaganza!
Creators scheduled to appear at the store include, including such artists J.P. Leon (Superman, Batman, X-Men), Pittsboro resident Tommy Lee Edwards (Turf, Marvel's 1985, Bullet Points), Brian Clevinger (Atomic Robo, Avengers, Captain America: Fighting Avenger), Dale Mettam (Inspector Gadget), and other creators including Firetower Studios (The Order of Dagonet, Princeless), Brockton McKinney and Larkin Ford (Ehmm Theory),Loston Wallace (Lorna Relic Wrangler), Branson Reagan (Dilemma Comics) plus live music in the parking lot and much more!
Designed to coincide with the release of such anticipated hit films as Thor and X-Men: First Class, this year’s Free Comic Book Day is expected to give out 2.7 million free comics worldwide, including such favorites as The Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America and Thor, Betty and Veronica, The Tick, Young Justice, King Fu Panda, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Smurfs, Owly, The Simpsons, Green Lantern, The Dark Crystal, Michael Moorcock’s Elric, Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog, James Patterson’s Witch & Wizardand the launch of the much-anticipated new all-ages book Super Dinosaur from Robert Kirkman, creator of the hit comic and AMC TV series The Walking Dead.

The event will be held May 7 starting at 10:00 a.m. at Ultimate Comics’s location at 6120-A Farrington Road Durham, NC 27717, just outside of Chapel Hill and just off exit 273-A from I-40 coming up from Raleigh. The store offers free parking for the event."
