The Free State Project was organized ten years ago as part of an experiment to get libertarian-minded Americans to move to New Hampshire in the attempt to have the state become more "libertarian". The initial goal was to have approximately 20,000 move to the state and under 12,000 have signed up to go with just under 1,000 actually moving there at last count. Several Floridians have left the warmth of our beaches and made the move; others have purchased property and go up for the summers.
Their success has been hit and miss, with some state legislation clearly of a libertarian nature passing, while other measures are passed which are not. Though one cannot be more impressed with those who have actually made the move. They are true liberty activisits, know the laws and work hard to move the state in the libertarian direction they envision.
What is interesting is what is happening in the 2012 presidential race with elections being held today in New Hampshire. Wtih Romney the strong leader in the polls and Ron Paul a distant second, should the election results come out the same, then one must conclude, as of today, the Free State Project has not met its goals. That is not to say it has not had an effect and perhaps just needs more time to brew.
A much smaller splinter group have moved to Wyoming which was the second "runner-up" in the contest ten years ago to be the home of Free Staters, however, again, that has had mixed results.
