September 6 was the day in history when...

1997:  Princess Diana was laid to rest.  Diana, along with her companion Dodi Fayed, were killed in an automobile accident as their car fled photographers in France.  The casket containing her body was taken on a four mile procession from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey.  It was followed by her sons, William and Harry, Prince Charles, Prince Philip, and representatives from the many charities Diana supported.  The funeral was watched by 2.5 million people around the world.  Diana was laid to rest in a private burial at her family's estate.

1987:  Benjamin and Patrick Binder were separated at John Hopkins Hospital.  The infant twins, who were conjoined at the back of the head, were separated in a 22 hour surgery that took the coordinated effort of over 70 individuals.  The babies had traveled with their parents from West Germany for the help of Dr. Benjamin Carson who lead the team.  This was the first such surgery in which both babies survived.

1972:  The Munich Olympic games resumed.  The previous day, 11 Israeli athletes had been taken hostage and murdered by members of the terrorist organization Black September.  Six hours into the standoff the games resumed with the president of the International Olympic Committee saying "The games must go on."  As the standoff continued, five hours later, the Egyptian basketball team refused to play their game against the team from the Philippines.  It was at that time that the games were officially suspended.  After the standoff's tragic end, a memorial service was held in the main stadium.  The games eventually resumed after 34 hours.
