March 7th was the day in history when…

1993: Different Strokes actor Todd Bridges was arrested for stabbing a tenant. The actor had experienced many run-ins with the law due to his ongoing battle with cocaine addiction. A 23 year old man named David Kitchen was renting a room in Bridge’s home. He confronted his tenant who was having a loud argument with his girlfriend. When Bridges told Kitchen to decrease the volume, the tenant lunched at him. The actor stabbed the man with a knife, puncturing his lung. Bridges was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but was later cleared of the charges when it was determined that Bridges acted in self defense.

1981: Disneyland had its first homicide. A fight broke out during a private party in Tomorrowland when one man accused another of touching his girlfriend. The argument escalated until 18 year old Mel Yorba was stabbed by James O’Driscoll who was 28. Yorba’s family won a $600,000 judgment against Disney for negligence. The suit claimed that Disney personnel responded improperly by driving Yorba to the hospital rather than allowing paramedics in the park. O’Driscoll was sentenced to 8 years in prison for second degree murder.

1967: Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa began an 8-year jail sentence. In 1964 the head of the union was convicted of jury tampering and attempted bribery of a grand jury. Hoffa spent the next three years appealing his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. After his final defeat he started serving his sentence on this date, however in 1971 Nixon commuted the remainder of Hoffa’s sentence.
