March 16th was the day in history when…

1991: Seven of Reba McEntire band members were killed in a plane crash. Members of the singer’s band and two of her managers took off in a private plane from a small airport near San Diego, CA bound for Indiana. The aircraft crashed in a mountain range near the Mexican border killing everyone aboard. McEntire was scheduled to follow on another flight shortly thereafter.

1985: Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson was taken hostage in Beirut. Anderson was stationed in Lebanon as the chief Middle East correspondent. On this date the reporter was walking home after a tennis match when he was taken from the street, put in the trunk of a car and taken to an undisclosed location. He was kept prisoner by a group of Hezbollah Shiite Muslims. Anderson was held for six years and nine months before he was finally released.

1968: Robert F. Kennedy announced he was entering the presidential campaign. Sitting President Lyndon Johnson was struggling in the polls. He narrowly defeated Senator Eugene McCarthy in the New Hampshire primary. Shortly afterwards Kennedy picked up his brother’s baton and announced his candidacy. Johnson then decided not to run for another term.
