Rochester’s Greentopia Festival continues through today and tomorrow, September 14 and 15, with music, films, ‘green’ exhibits, vendors and children’s activities. Most of the activities take place in the High Falls area, with the Little Theater and several other venues participating in the new Greentopia Film Festival.
Featured daylong events this weekend include a chef’s series at Browns Race Market; crafts, music and family fun at a nearby “kids zone”, and YMCA-sponsored teen and tween activities. Kanten Russell, a pro skateboarder turned action sport designer, will join a Q&A and, later this evening, entertain during an eco-friendly fashion show on Commercial Street. The fashions on parade include paper dresses, "upcycled" garments and organic materials.
Free, outdoor music performances are scheduled throughout the weekend. They include classical groups like the Ying Quartet, Greater Rochester Choral Consortium, jazz performances, and local indie favorites like Amanda Lee Peters.
On Sunday at 3 p.m., 66 percussionists led by the Eastman School’s Michael Burritt will gather to present John Luther Adam’s “Inuksuit” a rarely performed piece of experiential outdoor music on Browns Race and Pont de Rennes Bridge.
Mariel Hemingway, Academy award-nominated actress, author and healthy lifestyle advocate will sign copies of her new book “Running with Nature.” Later she and co-author Bobby Williams, her life partner, will attend a screening of the film “Running from Crazy,” at the Little Theater. In the film, Oscar-winner Barbara Kopple follows Hemingway as she looks at her family history of mental illness and multiple suicides, and how to live a healthier life.
Mariel’s grandfather Ernest Hemingway, a Nobel- and Pulitzer-Prize winning author, committed suicide in 1961. He had a turbulent personal life- married four times, had affairs, drank heavily and feared Hoover’s FBI was spying on him--which friends dismissed as crazy. He checked into a sanitorium in 1960 and had several shock treatments before going home. His lengthy FBI file was released in the 1980s after a FOIA request.
“Suicide is tricky” because it can be a split-second decision or planned for years, Mariel Hemingway told WXXI this week. She takes a holistic approach to mental and physical health through good nutrition, meditation, movement, and connectedness to self and earth.
