While schedules and dates for the National Women’s Soccer League have yet to be announced, one thing we know for sure is that two of U.S. Soccer’s best midfielders will not be there on opening day.

Attacking midfielders Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns FC) and Megan Rapinoe (Seattle Reign FC) will be starting their season with Division Feminine in France.

Heath recently penned a six-month deal with Paris Saint-Germain, which will tie her up until June, 2013 (the NWSL season is expected to finish up in August). In December, Rapinoe signed a similar contract with Olympique Lyonnais.

While fans will miss these two power players, I think we can all agree that in the long run, given the chance to play against some of the best teams in one of the best women's soccer leagues in the world will offer Heath and Rapinoe development opportunities beyond anything they could get state-wide.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Women's National Soccer team, under new coach Tom Sermanni, is gearing up for the USA’s first matches of 2013. The U.S. squad will match up against Sermanni’s native country of Scotland on Feb. 9 in Jacksonville, Florida and Feb. 13 in Nashville, Tennessee.

While both Heath and Rapinoe were recently named to Sermanni’s 29-man roster, they will not attend the entire U.S. training camp, however they should be available for selected or both matches against Scotland.

U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Notes: The 2013 Algarve Cup will run from March 6-13, 2013.
