To save the hospitality industry, Texas has to deal with illegal immigration

Texas Rep. Senfronia Calpernia Thompson, has been in politics for 20 years. She’s a well-known civil rights leader, who has introduced and passed more than 200 state laws. Her latest quest for equality in the state deals with ‘new standards for hotel housekeeping employees.’

Thompson claims the hotel industry is not treating their employees fairly, but of course, the industry will beg to differ with her. Common sense would also beg to differ with her on this one, especially when you consider the sanctuary status of Texas, which is an open door for the hospitality industry to mistreat their employees.

Texas is a sanctuary haven for illegal immigrants and if you look closely, or pay any attention at all, this group of employees are the only ones the hospitality industry will employ, basically because, they come with no rights to ‘minimum wage, eight hours and rest time, sick leave and vacation time.’

‘If Texas hotels can prove housekeepers earn minimum wage, she’ll drop her bill. But, she says, she’s skeptical they can,’ Thompson states.

She has every right to be skeptical, which means she will either drop her bill because of a lack of participation on behalf of the proof, or she’ll drop her bill, based the harm it will do to the hospitality industry.

"This doesn’t take into account the variability of the system," Angelo Lombardi of La Quinta hotels said. "The amount of time depends on room size and number of beds."

In other words, he’s admitting the bill will hurt La Quinta, but let’s not stop there. We have to include all the other hotels around the state.

"We’re not trying to put anyone out of business," Thompson said. "We’re not trying to make it difficult for businesses to come here and to work here within the State of Texas, we’re just trying to make sure that the people they employ, in particular people who are housekeepers in hotels, are compensated at the minimum wage."

The bill stands a snow ball chance in hell of passing, which will leave a black mark on Thompson’s record of achievements. To save the hospitality industry, she’s going to have to champion for the injustice and the inequality that comes with illegal immigration.
