According to the Houston Business Journal, the Texas Workforce Commission released an employment snapshot this past Friday that shows the Houston-Baytown-Sugarland area’s unemployment rate has been lowered to 8.7%. Although encouraging news, a rough road for the jobless remains since the competition is stacked with other equally qualified applicants. If resume submissions via the Internet have produced diminished returns, one must try a new approach to get a different result.
Splash Media, a Dallas-area based company with social media expertise, conducted several boot camps for CEOs in Houston this summer. During the camp, participants were somewhat surprised to learn that the second largest search engine is Google-owned You Tube. As a job hunting tool, You Tube is out of the traditional box but some seeking employment have encountered success. In fact, the You Tube CEO extended a job offer to a young man who showcased his technical skills via the popular site.
Should you lack the creativity to strike the perfect You Tube presentation, media giant CNN and Bubbletweet.com offer alternatives. CNN’s 30-Second Pitch and Bubbletweet.com provide effective visual opportunities for job seekers to connect with employers. Don’t fret about the duration because 30 seconds is ample for potential employees to introduce themselves by stating their previous experience, skill strengths, and areas of employment interest. Both are free.
