"Falling Skies," there's good news and there's bad news from TNT on Friday, July 18. The network has announced that there will be another season of the hit summer sci-fi series, but there's a catch: it will be its final season.

According to the TNT press release, the series from Amblin Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg will wrap up its epic story in a fifth and final season of 10 episodes. The network has also renewed summer hits "The Last Ship" and "Major Crimes." The former has received a 13-episode order and the latter a 15-episode order. These three dramas rank among basic cable's Top 5 scripted series this summer with total viewers and adults 25-54 and have helped TNT score a significant lead as basic cable's #1 network in primetime for the summer-to-date. "Falling Skies" has averaged more than 5.5 million viewers in Live+7 delivery for season 4 and ranks behind "The Last Ship" and "Rizzoli & Isles" among basic cable's Top 3 scripted series this summer with adults 25-54.

Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has said in a statement, "TNT's refreshed and recharged drama brand is soaring this summer, and that is due in large part to these three enormously popular dramas. "The Last Ship" has become this summer's top drama among key adult demos with its epic scale and visceral storytelling. "Major Crimes" continues to be one of the most enduring and popular crime-drama franchises on television. And "Falling Skies" has begun an ambitious and thrilling story arc this summer as it sets the stage for next year's climactic final season."

Yes, it is sad that "Falling Skies" is going to end, but at least we know the end is coming well in advance. Season 5 isn't going to be airing until next summer. Also, knowing it is the final season should allow them to wrap up the story the way they want to, rather than an abrupt end added in last minute or worse, a cliffhanger because it's cancelled suddenly. And hey, season 4 isn't over yet. There are still 18 episodes left of the series.

"Falling Skies" season 4 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on TNT. How do you want to see the TNT hit series end?
