TNT has been churning out some great shows over the years including Franklin & Bash, Falling Skies, Dallas, and Perception as well as upcoming new series Legends and the recently premiered Murder in the First. Now they are headed out to sea with their post-apocalyptic new series from Executive Producer Michael Bay The Last Ship.
In the series a global pandemic has killed 80% of the world’s population and the crew from an unaffected U.S. Navy destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction by finding a cure. The series stars Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Adam Baldwin (Firefly/Serenity), Tracy Middendorf (Boardwalk Empire), Jocko Sims (Crash), Charles Parnell (All My Children), Christina Elmore (Fruitvale Station), Michaela McManus (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Sam Spruell (Snow White & the Huntsman), Travis Van Winkle (Hart of Dixie) and Marissa Neitling (Leverage).
This is a somewhat different take on the post-apocalyptic genre that could deliver some intriguing storylines, but could also sink fast if they don’t incorporate some clever storytelling alongside intelligent use of the setting. The promos have been doing a good job of being somewhat cryptic about the overall direction the show is heading which could work to its benefit unless of course there is a reason they aren’t letting it out.
Despite what some may think of Michael Bay as a director there is no doubt that the man knows how to bring the action and with a Navy destroyer in the mix there is sure to be a hefty dose of explosions that will help keep things exciting.
Set out to sea and join the mission when The Last Ship premieres on June 22nd on TNT.
