AJ Styles, widely considered one of the best wrestlers in all of pro-wrestling, spoke with Scripps.com on Thursday about the role of Fortune in TNA, working with Ric Flair, the return of Sting and more. According to Styles, TNA is better off with the departures of Booker T and KEvin Nash because it opened the door for the four wrestlers that comprise Fortune.
"I think it’s a blessing in disguise that those guys took jobs with WWE. We’re moving forward here with something I hoped that would be done."
Last year, Ric Flair became the manager of AJ Styles and many thought it would catapult AJ into true stardom. Their partnership was the catalyst for the formation of Fortune. However, AJ's perspective on the pairing was a bit of a surprise:
“It didn’t fit my personality at all. Ric casts a big shadow. I respect him. Even though he’s 62, he’s still one of the most entertaining guys in pro wrestling."
Flair wasn't the only legend that AJ Styles has had a memorable partnership with. About 2 years ago, AJ was allegedly passed the torch by Sting. However, Sting has made his return to TNA last month and is once again the TNA champion.
"The whole thing with Sting and I, the torch was supposedly passed, but here he is back again (as TNA world champion). I don’t know if there is a torch to be passed anymore because so many people change their mind about whether they’re staying or going or retiring."
Despite the many changes that TNA has gone through over the last few years with Dixie Carter supplanting Jeff Jarrett as the boss, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff joining TNA, and other big names like Mr. Anderson, RVD, and The Hardys changing TNA's landscape, there's no question that AJ Style remains one of the top wrestlers in the company. His in-ring skills are only surpassed by his loyalty to TNA and his hopes of seeing TNA one day compete with the WWE:
"The biggest thing is, I want to be part of something that everybody knows about whether it’s Fortune or TNA, something that’s as big as WWE. I’m not saying I want to go to WWE or anything like that. I want TNA to explode.”
