On Monday, TMZ reported that the crash victims helped by George Zimmerman were white. The report sparked a firestorm of criticism from many who said the publication was stoking racial strife and engaging in race-baiting.
"According to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, the two adults who were pulled out of their overturned SUV on July 17 were described as a white male and a white female," TMZ breathlessly reported.
Readers weren't impressed.
"And this matters how?" one person asked.
"I had blue cheese for lunch and green tea. Who cares what color the people were," another reader said.
Twitchy said that TMZ "likes to SPICE UP its tweets with ALL CAPS" and said the site promoted the article with a tweet that said the victims helped by Zimmerman "weren’t just white — they were WHITE."
The Twitchy staff said a number of Twitter users took TMZ to task for the article.
"Sad how the media makes this yet another race topic. Steers away from the good deed. What's worse is the ignorant people who buy into it," one person tweeted.
"I'm sure Zimmerman knew the victims were white before he dove under the truck," another person sarcastically tweeted.
"At this point @TMZ is just being stupid. Really, the family saved was white??? Who cares, get over it," added "Meagan."
"And why, in God's name, does it warrant a special announcement that they were white. He helped save them 'Nuff said," another person tweeted.
After news broke that Zimmerman helped a family in the accident, many claimed it had been staged in order to help Zimmerman's public image.
Zimmerman has been the target of thousands of death threats since news broke of the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin. His recent acquittal has only fueled the demand for his murder with some calling for him to be beheaded.
One Twitter user sarcastically offered sage advice for Zimmerman: "Hey George Zimmerman, the next time you decide to pull a family out of a burning car, make sure they're not white, k?"
