In the mood for breakfast with a Midwestern flare, you have to try TJ's. This restaurant has home style cooking and reminds you of Grandma's house. TJ's is family owned and operated and has been in Avondale for over 30 years. This small restaurant is located on Dysart Road and Riley south of the I-10.
Beware if you are looking for small healthy portions. This is not the place for you. Their breakfast portions are huge. You will find that the food is always fresh and local when possible (like Hickman's farm fresh eggs). If you go away from TJ's hungry it is your own fault. As their motto states, "I got stuffed at TJ's" and it is the truth! The menu has your typical breakfast items but the portions are gigantic! The pancakes are the size of Frisbees and you get four of them; which is just one of the sides to choose with your entrée. If you do not save room for one of their giant homemade cinnamon rolls; your waitress will be happy to wrap one up for you to take home. Their sinful icing and whipped butter (to drizzle over top) will be on the side when you are ready for this scrumptious cinnamon roll.
TJ's only has about 30 booths. However they are expanding, but only to make room for a lobby area (so you don't have to wait outside for a table). They are also adding a bakery for their pies, cupcakes, and cookies, and yes their famous cinnamon rolls. There will be one round booth added to accommodate the farmers that show up every morning at 5 am for breakfast, coffee, and conversation, boasts Barbara, a waitress that as been serving at TJ's for 30 years. And even though the waitresses are busy they still take the time to have a quick conversation with you. Come to TJ's for great home style cooking, family, and an atmosphere just like Grandma's house.
