Ortiz, 38, raised some eyebrows in the Tate camp by saying that Rousey hasn't had any huge fights or fought any huge names yet.
He also hinted that Rousey is being protected by the UFC by fighting second-tier opponents instead of Cris "Cyborg" Santos.
“Is the popularity getting to Ronda’s head a little too much? She hasn’t had any huge fights, she hasn’t fought any huge names yet," Ortiz said. "I guess its one of those things that, in time, she needs to be tested. She’s being protected by the UFC and if she keeps being protected she will always be known as second-best.
“I haven’t seen any great stand-up skills. I have seen her closing the gap and taking a girl down and arm-barring her. I don’t think she even knows any moves other than an armbar.”
Rousey fought Tate in 2011, and the ladies are set to lock horns once more inside the world-famous UFC Octagon on Dec. 28 in the co-main of UFC 168 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Ortiz suggested that Rousey isn't being challenged with top talent such as Santos.
“Cris is one of the hardest working girls in the world and one of the baddest. She made a mistake nearly four years ago using a PED to cut weight, she tested positive and they took away her title. That’s the one mark on her record, she said she would never make that mistake again,” Ortiz said.
“She’s fought three times since then. She’s been clean and she’s promised me she will stay clean and that’s why I put my stamp of approval on her. She just demolished a girl in Muay Thai, French champion, the girl never even touched her. It just goes to show how dominant she is.”
Should Miesha Tate be offended by Ortiz's comments? That all depends who you ask, but it seems clear that Ortiz was simply trying to get a reaction out of Rousey's camp.
It's unlikely that he was attempting to insult Tate on purpose.
On the other hand, Ortiz suggesting that Santos is a bigger name than Tate is misguided. Tate has over 135,000 Twitter followers, while "Cyborg" has just 44,000.
"Cyborg" Santos might be ranked higher than Tate on the pound-for-pound list, but she's not a "bigger name" as far as popularity is concerned.
