On Senior Night at Calihan Hall, the Detroit Titans got a scare from the Loyola-Illinois Ramblers, but came away with the victory, 76-75.
Jason Calliste had only 7 points, but hit the game winning layup with 0.3 seconds left in the game. Ray McCallum led the Titans with 22 points, 5 assists and 5 boards.
Seniors Nick Minnerath and Doug Anderson both had big games on Senior Night. Minnerath had 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Anderson had 14 points and a couple of acrobatic dunks in the first half.
The Ramblers were led by Jordan Hicks with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Christian Thomas had 15 points and 10 boards. Jeff White added 13 points and Devon Turk had 12 points.
The Titans played with a high energy, aggressive defense and took a 42-33 lead into halftime. During the second half, though, the Ramblers would not go away and continued to chip away at the lead as the Titans went flat on both ends of the court. The Ramblers took the lead with nine seconds remaining in the game, 75-74, but Calliste drove the floor and went up strong with the game winning layup.
During the game, the University of Detroit Athletic Department recognized all of the seniors from not only the basketball team, but the cheer leading and dance teams as well. Also recognized was long time Titan supporter and former Titan baseball player Reggie Hall who was given the John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award. The award is given to a former varsity athlete who goes above and beyond with involvement in their community.
The Titans next travel to Temple to play a make up game with the Owls on Thursday. Loyola will host Cleveland St. on Saturday.
