The University of Detroit Titans (16-8, 8-3) were given a good run by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers (5-19, 1-9), the last place team in the Horizon League, 82-74.
The Titans got off to a fast start in this game and built a 16 point lead behind some good shooting and some thunderous dunks from Doug Anderson, who finished with 16. The Panthers would eat away at the lead by way of the 3 ball and trailed by only 3 at the break, 36-33.
The Panthers kept it close for most of the game after that, and were led by James Haarsma, who tied a career high with 26 points. Haarsma slipped and slashed his way through the Detroit defense with 9 of 13 shooting and 4 assists.
The Titans were able to maintain a possession lead for most of the second half thanks to some key 3 point shooting from Jason Calliste, who finished with a team high 22 points and was 5 of 9 from behind the arc. Nick Minnerath had another big game with 18 points and 8 boards. Ray McCallum also added 16 points and had some big baskets late in the game on a few hard drives down the lane.
The Titans also shot well from the free throw line going 13 of 16 and that is what allowed them to pull away towards the end of the game.
The Titans complete their Wisconsin road swing on Saturday with a tilt against the Phoenix of Green Bay, while the Panthers host Wright St. on Saturday as well.
