The University of Detroit Titans (15-8, 7-3) kept pace in the Horizon League standings, with an 88-77 victory over the Penguins from Youngstown St. (13-9, 5-4) at Calihan Hall on Friday night.
Nick Minnerath continued his dominance over Horizon League competition with 27 points and 5 rebounds. Ray McCallum had a very solid night with 23 points and 6 assists. Their combination included a fast break alley-oop dunk by Minnerath in the first half, which ended with the Titans up 42-40.
Kendrick Perry had a team high 22 points for the Penguins and Kamren Belin added 19 points on 6 of 10 from three point range. Damian Eargle had 12 points and 7 blocks in a losing effort.
This game was much closer than the Titans and Penguins first meeting in which the Titans won 101-60 at Youngstown St. With back and forth play most of the way, neither team led by more than 5 points until the Titans were finally able to pull away with about 8 minutes left. The Penguins committed some costly turnovers and Detroit was able to make some defensive stops.
The Titans maintained the lead for the rest of the game as they capitalized on free throws, mostly from Jason Calliste who finished with 16 and was 7 for 8 from the charity stripe. Calliste also shot 50% from behind the arc. Doug Anderson added 11 points and led the team with 7 rebounds.
Up next for the Titans are back to back road games next week at Milwaukee and Green Bay, while the Penguins travel to Cleveland St. to try and stay with the rest of the pack.
