“Devil May Cry” is a long running video game series with deep ties to the survival horror and action genres. Its inception occurred when it spun-out of the development of “Resident Evil 4.” It has had its highs and lows like all lengthy game franchises, but it is still going strong since Capcom’s reboot of the series by UK developer, Ninja Theory (“Heavenly Sword,” “Enslaved Odyssey to the West”). The reboot included a younger, revamped protagonist for more-Western audiences and updated the origin story for the title’s character, Dante.
The reboot has had some in a tizzy. The newest installment (simply titled “DmC”) has experienced some controversy amongst fans. Diehards have been hard to please with the hero’s new hair color and origin. Many gamers complain that “DmC” is too easy, the dialogue is cheesy, and that overall the game is shallow and more flashy than not. Critically, however, the game has done quite well garnishing high marks almost unanimously across-the-board.

Overall, the “Devil May Cry” franchise has been a success selling over twelve million copies and spurring numerous cross media endeavors such as: an animated series, graphic novels, manga, action figures, statuettes, clothing, and a possible film adaptation by the studio (Screen Gems) that brought “Resident Evil” to the big screen.
In lieu of Capcom’s reboot, Titan Comics has launched a comic book series called, “DmC: Devil May Cry: Vergil Chronicles Comic," based solely on Ninja Theory’s re-imagining of the “Devil May Cry” universe. This two-part series is along the same tone and style as Titan Comics “Assassin’s Creed” graphic novels and features the talented writings of Guillaume Dorison aka Izu (Omega Complex) along with artists Robin Recht (The Third Testament) and Patrick Pion (Tomb Raider: Dark Aeons).
The first two issues are already available digitally via ComiXology, so bust out the iPad, Kindle Fire, or any other tablet/smartphone and crack into Titan Comic’s newest series. It is sure to please. After reading the first issue on my fiancees iPad the other evening I was quite pleasantly surprised. The visuals are stunning, and it has been one the first comics that I have read digitally and enjoyed. As-soon-as it releases in print on May 15th, I will be trotting myself down to my local comic book store, “Merlyn’s Sci-fi and Fantasy Shop,” and picking it up to compare the copies.
All-in-all, this looks like a better-than-usual tie-in series for a popular video game franchise. Stay tuned for my reviews of the issues coming as-soon-as they release in print in May/June.
