New mom, Christine Padilla, 35, was sleep deprived when she drove through an intersection last February. Padilla plowed her SUV through a red light and into a nanny and a 14-month-old boy, dragging him and his stroller through the intersection, as reported by the New York Daily News.
Padilla, a California attorney, was sentenced Friday to a mere 49 hours of jail time, 180 of electronic surveillance after throwing Monserrat Mendez, the 41-year-old nanny, thirty feet and injuring the toddler. Mendez did not survive the accident. The toddler suffered multiple injuries, including, lacerated spleen, broken bones, broken ribs, and a skull fracture.
This whole incident occurred just two days after Christine gave birth to her own child. Prosecutors claimed Padila was sleep deprived after undergoing labor and was driving like someone under the influence. Christine pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter and two traffic infractions last month. Police confirmed that Padila had been speeding or talking on her cellphone at the time of the accident.
What do you think; should she have received a harsher punishment?
