Tips to start an Herb Garden

Summer in St Paul, Minnesota is brief compared to other parts of the United States but you can still have a great herb garden.  Perennials grow well and can make up an entire herb garden.  Perennials come back year after year so you should have a garden that can last for many years.

Herbs can be hard to weed so plant them in an area that is easy to keep clean of weeds.  Heavy mulch can keep the roots aerated and make it easier to pull up the weeds that do grow in your herb garden.

Plant your herb plants far enough apart to keep them from competing with each other.  Herbs can compete with each other if they are planted too close together.  Yet if you plant them close together you may not need to worry about weeds growing between the plants.

Some plants do not grow well next to each other so find a companion planting chart to keep plants that do not grow well away from each other.

Herbs are ready to harvest at different times to study the herbs you plant and harvest them at the appropriate time for the best results.  Herbs can be stored for up to a year if you dry them or freeze them.
