Eating while traveling can be a pain in the neck all in itself, now trying to eat clean and stay health while traveling can be even harder. For those of you who travel regularly, you know how hard it can be to get in quality meals or snacks at the right times of the day. When you fly you simply can’t request a protein shake or a protein bar. You can’t request really healthy options, well at least on most flights you can’t so you have to figure out alternatives in order to stay eating healthy while traveling.

How do I eat clean while traveling?

The first thing that you want to do is plan out how far you’re going and how long it’s going to take to get from point A to B. That way you can guide your efforts and figure out what nutritious things you can think about bringing along. The next thing you have to figure out is how much space and how you’re going to carry your meals. Now you don’t need an entire suit case in order to do this, all you will need is the following

-A few zip lock bags
- Some Tupperware
-A shaker cup

Depending where you are at, if you’re on a plane than you can take you ziplock bag with your protein and get a little bit of water and mix up a shake. If you need to eat some things bring some almonds and other nuts along with you for the ride. Most flights aren’t going to take that long, so that should hold you over until you get to the wherever it is that you’re going.

What if we eat at restaurants?

Good question!

Since you’re the one paying and they have to cook the food the way you want, simple order things that fit your macros. Only you know what fits them so be mindful of the things that you order. A few good rules of thumb to follow are the following

1. If you need carbs get some sweet potato or regular potatoes, meat, or chicken. Be sure to hold off on the oil on the meats, have them cook it dry!
2. Make sure your veggies are STEAMED and not filled with butter
3. Skip the sauces if you’re really serious about your efforts.
4. Practice common sense, and choose the best options

What do we eat if we’re staying with someone or in a hotel room?

If you’re staying with someone, make sure from the get go that they understand your efforts and what you’re trying to do. Sometimes just telling someone can help them to better understand where you’re going with your weight loss or healthy eating efforts.

If you’re stuck in a hotel room, simply take zip lock bags with your protein in them and utilize them when necessary. You can also make some oatmeal in the room by using the hot water from the coffee maker. You can also get some fruit in the lobby depending on which hotel you stay at. Most hotels have fridges so you can store some fruit and veggies in them. Just be smart about your selections and practice common sense and you should be ok!
