Here are some great tips for traveling with your pets, given to us by Mrs. Jamie Jones, owner of, “There’s No Place Like Home Pet Sitting in Raleigh, NC!
- First and foremost, plan for your pet just as you would plan for your children - take snacks, water, toys, a familiar blanket, and allow time for frequent stops on the road. Some form of ID is also a good idea (the standard tag with owner's name, home address, phone # will suffice, if pet is not microchipped), as well as your pet's latest vaccination report if traveling out of state or out of country.
- DO NOT let your pet ride in the car with its head outside of the window - eye, ear and nose injuries can occur easier than most people realize! And, of course, NEVER let your pet ride outside of a crate in the back of a truck, for obvious reasons.
- Try to stick to your pet's normal feeding routine while on the road as much as possible, especially if they are not overly fond of vehicle rides to begin with. Most animals are all about routine, and this will help alleviate any stress they are already feeling.
- If you are traveling with a cat, ALWAYS keep your feline in a carrier inside the car. This will prevent accidents if the cat wanders underneath your feet while you are driving, and many cats get nauseous when looking out a window at fast moving objects (more so than dogs). Also, don't forget to take a traveling litter box.
