Ironmancab's Photo-Winter is coming!
The heat of summer is gone, fall weather is coming to an end and the temperature here in Boise is getting colder. Rather than shying away from running in the cold, why not just prepare yourself for it, plan on running in it and enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape that is soon on it's way to Boise?
You don't have to stop running in the winter, you just have to make sure you are properly equipped to go out in the cold. Winter running can be really enjoyable contrary to what you might think.
For winter running you only need a few things and you'll barely notice the winter chill while you're out on your daily run.
~Be sure to layer your clothing, it's better to go out too warm than too cold, you can always take off an outer layer if you get too warm.
~Protect your head, neck and ears-A fleece balaclava is always nice, or some sort of ear warmers, a hat and a neck scarf.
~Gloves-Sometimes a "mitten" type of style is nice as they keep your fingers toasty warm. They make all kinds of running gloves that have cut off fingers with a mitten type of pullover that you can take on and off if your fingers get too hot or cold.
~Running tights/pants-There are all types of running pants you can choose from that vary in style, fit and thickness for varying warmth.
~Long sleeve running shirt-There are all types of running shirts that you can choose from that vary in style, fit and thickness for varying warmth. For running shirts choose the types made of moisture wicking types of material so you don't get chilled if you sweat.
~Socks-For winter running, SmartWool socks are great for keeping your feet warm.
~Running Jacket-There are all types of running jackets you can choose from that vary in style, fit and thickness for varying warmth. The type of jacket you choose depends on how cold it is outside and how many layers you'll be wearing under the jacket. Personally, I wear a lighter jacket that I can remove and tie around my waist if I get too warm. I wear a thicker, long sleeve running shirt along with my jog bra underneath and I'm usually always plenty warm.
~Vaseline-Don't forget to protect the exposed skin of your face and your lips. A layer of Vaseline can help keep your exposed skin protected from the wind and cold.

~Two other things that will surely help you enjoy winter running-A good running partner or a group of running friends to enjoy the winter scenery with...and after your run...enjoying a hot cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate with your running friends in a warm comfortable environment :)
