Since today is St. Patrick’s Day and the tradition is to wear green, maybe we can extend that to our homes as well. Today’s green day reminds us that we should be living as “green” ourselves as possible. So the question is what are you doing to live greener every day? It also means to recycle, reuse and reduce what we are using so that we do not leave such a huge carbon implant. These are ideas that anyone can add to their lifestyle or use as a replacement for some things that may not be so green.
Starting in the kitchen only use the stove once a day, gas or electric it is using up a lot of energy and it is heating up the house making it unbearable now that it is warming up. And that means we will need to turn down the thermostat and flip the AC on. Then we are using even more energy. Teach the kids that a good breakfast of cold fruits and raw veggies or a cool bowl of milk and cereal is the breakfast plan.
For lunch teach them that it is best to eat a healthy sandwich or a nice green cool salad with all the trimmings. A cup of fresh juiced fruit juice in the afternoon or a fruit smoothie is the best idea on a day where the kids have been out playing or in school all day. Top off the day with a home cooked meal that everyone will love.
And cooking after the sun goes down will not cause the thermostat to have to be lowered so much. These ideas can be used to save energy around the home. When the sun is up and there is an abundance of light, simply open all the windows and blinds letting in that outdoor light. Turn off the lights in the whole house until it gets too dark to see safely.
