My new favorite bean is the Asian Bean. I don’t know if they grow well in the St. Paul, Minnesota area all the time but I had a great crop this year.
The Asian Bean is a vine that produces very long slender beans. These beans can grow to be two feet or more in length and they make picking them easy compared to other smaller beans.
They need to be staked so that the vines are off of the ground and the beans can form properly. They like to hang down when they grow so put a trellis or just a pole by the plants when they are small so the vine can grow up along the trellis or pole. You can even plant a sunflower seed among the bean seeds and let the vines grow up the sunflowers for a trellis.
When the beans are grown they are in pairs and the trail down toward the ground. They are easy to find and pick since you usually pick two at a time. These beans are so long that it does not take many to make a dish. That makes them easier to harvest then other smaller beans.
