Tips for great updos and half up/half down hairstyles (Photos)

Updos and half up/half down hairstyles continue to be one of the hottest trends for hair this year not only because they enhance your natural beauty but because they're also relatively easy to recreate. They're fun for a causal look as well as elegant enough for a night out on the town. Here are some great tips to create your updo or half up half down look last all day and all night.

Depending on when you're planning on creating your look, don't wash your hair that same day. Freshly washed hair is soft and tends to not hold a style for long. By waiting a day, your hair has a chance to regain its natural moisture balance and therefore ensure that your style will last.

Choose silicone free shampoos and conditioners that won't dry your hair out and make it limp and lifeless. A few shampoos and conditioners that you can try are Burt’s Bees Herbal Treatment and Grapefruit and Sugar Beet Shampoo and Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Grapefruit and Sugar Beet Conditioner, L’Oreal’s Ever Sleek Silicone-Free Intense Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner or even Suave Juicy Green Apple Shampoo and Conditioner. For a leave in conditioner try Bumble and Bumble Leave in Conditioner or Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner.

Make sure you prepare your hair for styling with the right products. Use a mousse or gel in your hair to make sure your hairstyle lasts all day without going flat. By scrunching mousse into dry hair you're also giving your hair that extra body necessary as well. Try Pantene's Triple Action Volume Mousse or Tresemme TRES Extra Firm Control Gel. Avoid using hairspray if possible since women have a tendency of overusing hairspray and depending on the weather it can get sticky. If you must use hairspray try using a non sticky formula like Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play or Dermaorganic Flex Hold Sculpting Spray with Argan Oil.

When creating an updo one great must have is a rat-tail comb. Consider purchasing a metal one versus a plastic one. A metal comb actually works better than a plastic one and believe it or not is actually gentler. A rat-tail comb is essential for teasing your hair and for smoothing your updo down on the sides. Try a metal rat-tail comb by Paul Mitchell for great results.

Now that you have the essentials for creating your updo, or half up/half down have fun creating new and different looks for day or night!
