Entry materials for the 2012 San Diego County Fair will be available soon. The fair has a huge Home and Hobby department made up of entries from amateurs and professionals alike. This article will discuss tips to get into the Home and Hobby division. Other divisions such as Fine Art, Design in Wood, Photography, etc. have different requirements and rules. Check with those departments when entry materials become available.
Entry materials will be available online at Sdfair.com beginning mid-February to mid-March. When they are published, read them carefully, including the fine print. The Home and Hobby department has many categories (divisions) and divisions have classes with specific types of work. If you wanted to enter the embroidery project, you would have to check to see what class your project will fit best. An embroidered pillow would not be entered into the class for embroidered wall hangings, for example. Each division or class comes with a detailed explanation of what should be entered there. If you are not sure, contact the district office for clarification. All entries require a non-refundable fee for each entry. A free pass to the fair will be given in exchange for each item up to two (i.e. if you only enter one entry, you will receive one, if you enter more than one, you will receive two).
Submit only your best work, preferably recent. Prizes and ribbons are given for outstanding work entered in the proper category. Don't submit anything that would need special conditions to be exhibited. If you have a complicated or fragile item, it might be disqualified or could be damaged. Insure items that are valuable or don't enter them into the competitions. If you're entering a collection, be prepared to share a display container or bring your own as space is very limited.
Most items entered into the Home and Hobby department will be accepted and displayed. There are reasons why an item might be disqualified such as: the item broke/became severely damaged, item is too large, item is obviously entered into the wrong division or class (such as it was entered into the embroidery class when it's a machine knitted item) or item is not suitable for family viewing. You will not be told if the entry is not acceptable when you deliver your work.
Check Sdfair.com for exact entry and delivery dates for each category and section. Entry forms must be submitted online by May 2nd, but delivery and pick up dates may vary. Usually, items can be picked up the day after the end of the fair,July 5th. Entries not picked up in time will be disposed of. The San Diego County Fair is located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and runs from June 8th to July 4th, closed on Mondays except July 2nd.
