Tips for changing schools

Changing a student’s school can happen for a lot of reasons. A family can move. A school might deem that they cannot support a student with their needs and send them to another school. Here are some things you should know when schools change.

1. When moving into the district, visit their Special Education office and take the last IEP with you.

2. Sign releases at the school so they can speak to whomever they need to about the student.

3. Give all your contact information, including your email, to the school and teachers and tell them when and in what way is best to reach you.

4. Take any notes from the doctors if needed.

5. Ask for your child to have a tour of the school and meet the teachers beforehand if there is time.

6. Know that within 60 days the school will do their own IEP. This happens even if another school places the student there.

7. Make sure a Positive Behavior Plan is with the IEP if needed.

When the child changes schools it is a nervous time for everyone no matter why they change schools. Be prepared and stay calm. It will work out and you will look back at this time and remember that all the effort now was worth it in the end.
