Most of the principles of caring for a family member with the H1N1 (Swine) flu are the same no matter the age; however, seniors have some special needs. Here are some tips for caring for someone who has the flu.

Tips for all

  • Give the person a box of tissues and a disposable bag in which to discard them. Do not handle the soiled tissues. Throw the bag directly in the trash.
  • Use alcohol-based hand rub frequently—both the caregiver and the ill person. Wash your hands when soiled, before preparing food, and after toileting.
  • Give the ill person a private room if possible. Wash utensils in hot water or a dishwasher. Wash linens in hot water.
  • Download a list of products that will kill influenza A on hard surfaces. Don’t forget to clean the TV remote, the phone, and computer keypads.

Tips for seniors

  • Ask your healthcare provider if you should take antiviral medications.
  • Older adults are prone to dehydration and may not feel thirsty. Make sure the person drinks fluids. If he or she can only take a small amount, offer it frequently. Signs of dehydration include: dry lips, dry eyes; dizzy when stands; fast heart beat; unable to urinate or urine is dark in color.
  • If the ill person has a chronic lung disease, diabetes, or other chronic illness ask his or her healthcare provider for a list of danger signs that should prompt a phone call or office visit.

DANGER SIGNS

Get help right away if the sick person:

  • has trouble breathing
  • gets blue lips
  • becomes confused or very drowsy and cannot wake up
  • has a seizure
