Locally, sledding, snowboard and cross-country skiing depend on real snow. For sledding, Murdock Park and Happy Hollow Park have specific sled runs. Although Murdock borders 18th St., there is bunker between the end of the run and the road. It is short enough for the little ones, but a good ride for older kids (and adults). Happy Hollow’s sled run is higher and ends in the park. Slater Center on Purdue Campus is recognized as a prime sledding and snowboarding hill. Horticulture Park, especially from the IN 26 entry, has some good sledding for both children and adults.

Cross-country skiing was improved by the addition of Prophetstown State Park (link). Across the road at the Tippecanoe County Battlefield Park (link) is a good beginner venue. Prophetstown is subject to blowing and drifting so you need a nice ground cover of heavy snow. The trails are mostly on gentle, rolling hills with prairie in between. Miles of trails are available, if there is no flooding.

The Purdue Golf Courses (link) offer a cross-country skiing challenge.

Although the lagoon at Columbian Park is off limits to ice skaters; the Riverside Skating Center is open for the ice skaters (link).

For local die-hard winter fun fans, typically, we have to travel.

For cross-country skiers and sledders, Lake County Parks (link) (within 2 hour drive) have several county parks very amenable to winter sports. They also have 3 parks with cross-country ski equipment rentals. They usually have natural snow. The Dunes National Lakeshore (link) supports an excellent multi-purpose venue for cross-country skiers in Glenwood Dunes Facility (link), near Porter, Indiana. This venue has several miles of trails in a dune ridge, advanced beginner, or better, skill level suggested. The beginner area in this park has been allowed to over grow.

Tippecanoe River State Park (link) features miles of trails for cross-country skiers, but no longer offers equipment rental. Indiana Dunes State Park (link) also allows cross-country skiing, but no rentals.

Resorts within 4 hours drive:

Paoli Peaks Ski Resort, Paoli, Indiana. (link).

Perfect North Slopes, Lawrenceburg, Indiana (link).

Bittersweet Ski resort, Otsego, Mich. (link).

Swiss Valley Ski resort, Jones, Mich. (link).
